Design and construction of a triple-axis crystal neutron spectrometer and performance testing by means of measurements of dispersion relations in copper

The Triple-Axis Crystal Neutron Spectrometer is the best instrument for the study of lattice dynamics, when the neutron inelastic scattering technique is used. Design, construction and operation of a triple-axis crystal neutron spectrometer, whose construction was recently finished at IEA are described. The design principles employed are directed to mechanical simplicity, facility of construction and flexibility in operation, with no adapted components to industrial applications were used in the construction. The operational characteristics of the spectrometer, such as the neutron wavelenght of the incoming beam and the resolution have been determined. With the purpose to check the performance of IEA Triple-Axis Crystal Neutron Spectrometer, dispersion relation curves for copper, at room temperature, have been measured. The frequency of phonons propagating along three major symmetry directions have been determined. The measurements were carried out operating the Triple-Axis Spectrometer in the 'sup(→)Q-constant' mode. An excelent agreement could be observed between the results obtained in the present experiment and the data for copper presented in the literature. This comparison indicates that the IEA Triple-Axis Crystal Neutron Spectrometer is in good operational conditions and is able to perform original experiments. Details on the experimental procedures for the case of a Triple-Axis Spectrometer operating in 'sup(→)Q-constant' mode are also presented. (Author)

O Espectrometro de Cristal de Tres Eixos e o intrumento mais apropriado para o estudo da dinamica de redes cristalinas quando se utiliza a tecnica de espalhamento de neutrons lentos. Nesta dissertacao sao descritos pormenores do projeto, da construcao e da colocacao em operacao de um espectrometro de cristal de tres eixos, recem construido no IEA. O projeto e original e foi desenvolvido visando a maxima simplicidade na construcao e grande flexibilidade de operacao do aparelho, sem perda da precisao instrumental. Na construcao foram adaptados componentes de aplicacao industrial, de forma a permitir baixo custo de construcao e maior facilidade de montagem. Foram determinadas as caracteristicas operacionais, tais como, o comprimento de onda dos neutrons do feixe monocromatico e a resolucao. Para verificacao do desempenho do espectrometro foram medidas as relacoes de dispersao de uma amostra monocristalina de Cobre a temperatura ambiente. Foram determinadas as frequencias para fonons propagando-se ao longo das tres direcoes de mais alta simetria do cristal. As medidas foram realizadas com o espectrometro operando segundo o metodo 'sup(→)Q-constante'. As frequencias medidas neste trabalho e aquelas encontradas na literatura mostram excelente concordancia, indicando que o espectrometro de cristal de tres eixos do IEA esta em condicoes de medir relacoes de dispersao ineditas. Neste trabalho e tambem apresentada a sistematica de operacao do espectrometro e o calculo pormenorizado das posicoes angulares para detecao de grupos de neutrons no Cobre. (Autor)Files
