Quarks and leptons, masses and mixing angles in unified gauge theories

Description

A possible mechanism for generating the light fermion mass matrix (masses and mixing angles) and for reducing the independent parameters in a unified gauge theory are discussed under the headings; universality of weak couplings in non-abelian gauge theories, natural flavour conservation, quark mass ratios and quark masses, origin of the small masses and mixing angles, light fermion mass spectrum emerging from radiative corrections using SU(3) x U(1), and the extended SU(3) x U(1) model.
