Description

We examined changes in membrane fluidities, SOD activities and lipid peroxides by low-dose whole-body X-ray irradiation, to elucidate the mechanism of radiation hormesis. The results obtained are as follows; 1. The activities of Mn-SOD which is membrane protein in mitochondria, increased at dose of 50 cGy exposure. 2. Membrane protein fluidities of brain and spleen cells in rats at dose of 25 ∼ 50 cGy exposure were enhanced in comparison with those of non-irradiated rats. 3. Decreased lipid peroxide levels enhanced membrane protein fluidities. These phenomena suggested that the enhancement of membrane functions were caused by low-dose X-ray irradiation. (author)
