Isotope effects in hydrophobic binding measured by high-pressure liquid chromatography

Description

Use of high-pressure liquid chromatography resulted in isotopic separation of several deuterated and corresponding protonated organic substances. H was found to be favored in the stationary phase relative to D, and CH(CD) bonds were found to be directly involved in the hydrophobic effect. The hydrophobic effect was solvent dependent, but showed little dependence on functional group or cyclic vs. open-chain structures with two exceptions noted. An explanation of the exceptions was proposed
