Description

The fundamental characteristics of magnetotails are reviewed, and definitions of specific magnetotail regions and phenomena are developed. The magnetotails of celestial bodies with intrinsic magnetic fields (such as the planets) are differentiated from those of nonmagnetic bodies with ionized atmospheres (such as comets). Particular attention is given to magnetospheres; magnetopause boundary layers; tail lobes, plasma sheets, and neutral sheets; the distant magnetotail; spatial variations of tail parameters; the electrical current system; plasma convection; and plasma waves. Diagrams and tables of numerical data are provided
