Swift heavy ion irradiations of aliphatic polymers

Description

This work allows a general outlook of the irradiation of aliphatic polymers with swift heavy ions. The first stage is devoted to the qualitative and quantitative study of defects created into polyethylene under a high electronic stopping power irradiation. The influence of the chain branching is take in account by the study of polypropylene and polybutene under irradiation. Some mechanisms are proposed to explain the formation of all the detected defects. Under low electronic stopping power irradiations, we develop a simulation which allows to compare the radial extension of the inelastic deposited dose due to atomic recoils with these due to the incident projectile and to secondary electrons of the target. The second stage gives access to the localisation of defects around the ion path by two experimental techniques. Low temperature infrared measurements of irradiated samples permit to discriminate the defects created into the crystalline phase from those of the amorphous phase and give access to their position with respect to the track of the ion. Small angle X scattering measurements are also useful for the determination of the position of defects. In this mind, bromination experiments allow the replacement of unsaturations created under irradiation. We have access to bromine atoms which are easily detectable and so to the position of unsaturations. In these experiments, the parameters of the incident ion are essential: the electronic stopping power must be high enough to obtain a good contrast for the non-brominated sample (track radius) but it mustn't be too high to avoid the creation of too big scattering objects which are not experimentally resolved. Abstract (French)

Cette these comporte 4 volets qui fournissent un aspect general coherent de l'irradiation aux ions lourds des polymeres aliphatiques. Le premier, a caractere fondamental, traite du cas des cibles de polyethylene (PB) sous irradiation avec des ions de haute energie. Les resultats anterieurs concernant les mesures de rendements de formation de defauts et la description des effets de vitesse (lies a l'extension radiale de la perte d'energie de l'ion incident) ont ete confirmes et affines. Deux polymeres aliphatiques supplementaires de structure voisine de celle du PE ont ete etudies afin d'estimer l'influence du substituant sur la formation de defaut sous irradiation. Les resultats permettent de proposer des mecanismes consistants pour expliquer la formation de chaque type de defaut. Le second s'interesse a la formation de defauts dans le PE a beaucoup plus basse energie. Le developpement d'un programme permettant de calculer le depot radial d'energie 'inelastique' du aux atomes de recul permet de mieux comprendre l'influence des densites d'ionisation sur les rendements de formation des defauts. Des techniques originales de localisation des defauts ont ete developpees. Ce sont les volets 3 et 4 qui donnent acces a l'extension radiale des defauts autour du passage de l'ion: Une technique de spectroscopie infrarouge a froid permet de discriminer les defauts crees dans la phase amorphe de ceux crees dans la phase cristalline et donne acces a leur position par rapport a la trace laissee par l'ion. L'utilisation de la diffraction des rayons X aux petits angles (DXPA) combinee a une technique de substitution des liaisons multiples par bromation fait appel a un compromis dans le choix de l'ion qui doit posseder un pouvoir d'arret eleve pour obtenir un contraste suffisant en DXPA, mais qui ne doit pas creer une trace trop importante sous peine de deplacer le signal vers les tres petits angles inaccessibles avec le dispositif experimental utilise
