Reactions of hydrogen atoms in aqueous solutions: effect of pH on reactions with cysteine and penicillamine
Description
The total rate constant for H-atom reactions with cysteine and penicillamine has been determined at pH 1 and pH 6 utilizing a photolytic source of H-atoms. The effect of COOH dissociation is to increase k/sub cysteine/ by 1.3 and k/sub penicillamine/ by 1.75. This effect is of the same magnitude as that observed for nonsulfhydryl amino acids. At higher pH values, dissociation of NH3+ causes further enhancement of the rate for penicillamine. The mechanism of H-atom reactions with these amino acids appears to be independent of pH in the range of 1 to 6
