Description

We have investigated the frequency of somatic cell mutations at the hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyl transferase (HPRT) locus in human population from Kerala, in the south west coast of India. The T lymphocyte cloning assay was used to measure the frequency of somatic cell mutations. Thus, the present study has indicated that the natural radiation levels prevailing in the Kerala coast did not influence the somatic mutations at the HPRT locus. However, a statistically significant effect of age and smoking habit of the individuals on somatic cell mutations could be established
