Radiation protection aspects of ventilation practices
Description
The purpose of this guideline is to outline ventilation practices which, when implemented, should provide radiation protection in above ground mines, underground mines and surfaces installations such as mills, as defined by Clause 2 of the Code of Practice on Radiation Protection in the Mining and Milling of Radioactive Ores 1980. Unless otherwise stated, information provided in the guideline can be utilised in all mines and surface installations extracting and treating radioactive ores. Information in the guideline is mainly restricted to practices intended to minimise exposure to airborne contaminants of persons employed in mines and associated surface installations. However, where appropriate, reference is made to other practices and procedures for minimising radiation exposure. The guideline presents the information by considering: the types of airborne contaminants; the origin and source of airborne contaminants; the requirements of ventilation systems; the ventilation practices for reducing radiation exposure; and the monitoring of airborne contaminants
