Regulatory aspects of spent fuel storage facilities
Description
In view of the President's moratorium on spent fuel reprocessing, the magnitude of the spent fuel problem is reported here. It is concluded that even with reracking in existing pools, with compacting at new sites, and with minor trans-shipment (shipment of spent fuel from one reactor site with a full pool to one with some pool space to give temporary relief for the storage problem) a new away-from-reactor (AFR) storage site will be necessary by 1985. A general outline of the type of information necessary for licensing of an AFR storage facility is given
