Description
In 2019 France had 58 nuclear reactors in operation by Electricité de France (EdF), with a total capacity of over 63 GW(e), deriving about 75% of its electricity from nuclear energy. France chose a closed fuel cycle at the very beginning of its nuclear programme, involving the reprocessing of SNF to recover uranium and plutonium for reuse and to reduce the volume of high level waste for disposal. Recycling allows 30% more energy to be extracted from the original uranium and leads to a great reduction in both the amount and the radiotoxicity of waste to be disposed of.
