Determination of noble metals at crustal abundances

Description
A novel method utilizing particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) with microbeams following fire-assay has been developed to determine platinum group elements (PGE) and Au at sub-ppm levels suitable for application in exploration. Analyses of the prills from the lead and silver fire-assay yield Pt, Pd and Au concentrations readily. NiS must be used as collector if the complete suite of PGE is required, but this method is not as convenient. 6 refs., 1 tab., 1 fig
