After having described how methanization works and indicated how many methanization units are present in France, a first article (of 5 articles) discusses some controversies about the possible role of methanization in the struggle against greenhouse gas emissions, about leakages on production sites, about the impact of methanization on soils (enrichment or impoverishment), about the risk of speculation and land grabbing with biogas, about the contribution of methanization to breeding industrialisation, about risks of incident in methanisation units, and about the way methanization units are controlled. The other articles focus of some of these issues: speculation and land grabbing as excesses of 'green gas' production (land grabbing in Germany by industrial installations, higher subsidies than biological agriculture), the impact of the 'green' gas lobby on the French agriculture (a benefit for large exploitations, lack of agricultural soils, influence of gas companies, support to industrial projects, a very high guaranteed purchase price. They also present and comment examples of benefits for farmers, for land and for the environment with the use of methanization to produce energy or to produce digestates which is then used as a more natural fertiliser (instead of chemical ones).
