A short review is presented of the development of nuclear energy, with particular reference to the British nuclear power programme. Aspects covered include: development of Magnox power reactors, development of AGR power reactors, technical problems, energy policy and energy requirements, forecasts, comparisons between AGR and PWR reactors for the British electric power programme, opposition to nuclear power, public relations, the complete fuel cycle, uranium supplies and uranium enrichment, plutonium and the fast breeder reactor.
