Approaches to the assessment of medical radiation exposure of the population from CT scanning

Description

Based on data on the number and type of procedures performed in 2008 by the University Hospital in Olomouc, the effective dose for CT examinations was estimated; the weighted average obtained was 5.74 mSv. Combination of this figure with the total number of CT procedures performed in the Czech Republic in 2008 led to a collective effective dose of 4095 manSv. The age distribution of the population receiving CT scans in the Czech Republic was evaluated and the data compared to published data from the US. The usefulness of Hospital Information Systems for the evaluation of the ionizing radiation burden to patients was proved
