Steam gasification of wood char: from isolated particle to continuous fixed bed

Description

From the last decades, the continuous increase of the world energy demand and the problem of the increase in the greenhouse effect made the renewable energies more attractive. In this context, the biomass presents an interesting potential, and the emergence of efficient technologies, such as gasification, encourages the development of this route. An experimental study on the steam gasification of an isolated wood char particle was performed on a 'macro- TG' apparatus. The evolution of the particle mass during gasification under precisely controlled operating conditions was recorded. Typically, at a temperature of 930 deg. C and under a steam partial pressure of 0,2 atm, the time for complete gasification of a 7 mm diameter wood char particle was 32 min. The parametric study enabled to identify the temperature and the heating rate during pyrolysis as strongly influent parameters on the gasification rate. Moreover, the investigation of a good indicator for the char reactive surface was carried out. A numerical model of the gasification of a wood char particle was developed. The confrontation with the experimental results from the parametric study enabled to determine the kinetics constants of the steam gasification reaction. The results showed that in industrial conditions, the gasification process of a charcoal particle follows neither a shrinking core, nor a homogeneous model. The model enabled to better understand the coupling between reaction kinetics and heat/mass transfers inside the particle. Finally, an experimental reactor for the gasification of a fixed bed of char particles was especially designed and built; it precisely replicates the operating conditions of an industrial reactor. The first tests in steady state exhibited very satisfactory mass balance closures. (author)

Abstract (French)

Face a la croissance de la demande energetique mondiale et la recente prise de conscience des problemes d'augmentation de l'effet de serre et d'epuisement des ressources fossiles, les energies renouvelables suscitent aujourd'hui un interet sans egal. Dans ce contexte, la biomasse presente un potentiel important, et des technologies de valorisation efficaces, comme la gazeification, emergent et encouragent le developpement de cette filiere. Une etude experimentale de la gazeification a la vapeur d'eau d'une particule de charbon de bois isolee a ete realisee sur un reacteur de type 'macro-TG'. L'evolution de la masse de la particule a ete enregistree durant sa gazeification dans des conditions operatoires maitrisees. Ainsi, a une temperature de 930 deg. C et sous une pression partielle de vapeur d'eau de 0,2 atm, une particule de charbon de bois de 7 mm de diametre se gazeifie en 32 min. L'etude parametrique menee a permis d'identifier la temperature et la vitesse de chauffe pendant la pyrolyse comme des parametres particulierement influents sur la vitesse de gazeification. La recherche d'un critere de surface reactive du char a egalement ete entreprise. Un modele numerique de gazeification d'une particule de charbon de bois a ete developpe. La confrontation avec les resultats experimentaux issus de l'etude parametrique a permis de determiner les parametres cinetiques de la reaction de gazeification a la vapeur d'eau. Les resultats obtenus ont montre que dans des conditions operatoires industrielles, le processus de gazeification d'une particule de char ne suivait ni un modele de coeur retrecissant, ni un modele homogene. Le modele a permis d'apprehender les couplages entre cinetique chimique et transferts de chaleur et de matiere au sein meme de la particule. Un reacteur experimental de gazeification en lit fixe continu a ete specialement concu et realise; il reproduit finement les conditions operatoires d'un reacteur industriel. Les premiers tests en regime continu ont permis de realiser des bilans massiques tres satisfaisants. (auteur)
