Effect of extrusion on the gamma-phase composition of the U-2.4Nb alloy

  • 1. Union Carbide Corp., Nuclear Division, Oak Ridge, TN

Description

Extrusion at temperatures high in the α+γ2 equilibrium region produce a metastable structure with a composition dependent on extrusion conditions. The more severe the conditions, the lower the niobium concentration in the -γ1-phase. Friction-induced heating forced the rod into higher temperature regions causing reduction in γν /SUB b/ . The α→β phase transformation tended to limit the temperature of the extruded rod, thus limiting the compositional changes
