Expert magnet design program

Creators

Description

An EMD program is now available to assist in the design of H-frame bending magnets. The program is an example of expert software, wherein decision algorithms are built around a specialized knowledge base to reach a practical solution to a problem presented by the interactive user. Given such information as particle type, energy, bend angle, and clear aperture, the program designs a magnet. It designs the vacuum chamber, allows clearance between the magnet poles and the vacuum chamber for alignment, designs the magnet-core cross section, and designs the coil using one of five available LAMPF-standard conductors that satisfies the current density, pressure-drop, temperature-rise, and water-velocity requirements. The user can input specific parameters or allow the program to use built-in default values that will produce a feasible design
