Highlights: • Contrast enhanced MRI is the best available imaging modality to diagnose and monitor arthritis in the TMJ. • Magnetic field strength and SNR did not consistently influence the inter-reader reliability and perceived image quality. • Higher resolution from TMJ-specific coils improved inter-reader and -protocol reliability, and perceived image quality. • Sagittal and coronal sequences were preferred over axial for visualizing most of the relevant diagnostic features. - Abstract: ObjectiveTemporomandibular joints (TMJs) frequently develop silent inflammatory and osteochondral changes in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Data-driven recommendations for TMJ imaging protocol are needed to reduce measurement error and scanning time. This study compares the impact of different protocols, imaging coils, and magnet strength on the reliability of image assessment and the subjective quality of images.
