Description
Magnetic moment measurements over the last fifty years have provided considerable information on the microscopic structure of low-lying excited states of nuclei across the periodic table. At the same time there have been many developments in theoretical calculations, particularly in nuclei having either protons or neutrons or both filling orbitals at or near closed shells. Recent experimental challenges were to find means to populate states in nuclei far from stability. The development of radioactive beams has been slow and few nuclei have been accessed by that route. However, novel approaches, in particular the capture of an a particle from a 12C target by stable nuclei in a beam, have opened new pathways. In this work, the region around N = 50, which includes the isotopes of Kr, Sr and Zr, has been investigated. The g factors of 2+1 and 4+1 states in the unstable isotopes of 82Sr and 90Sr were measured by the transient field technique and compared to the results of large scale shell-model calculations. In addition, the g factor of the 4+1 state in 86Kr was measured
