Description

The present position concerning the safety of PWR pressure vessels is examined with reference to methods of preserving this safety, including the quality of material used, manufacture of the pressure vessel and operation of the reactor. The role of fracture mechanics, especially fracture toughness and critical crack size determination, is discussed and the growth of cracks under severe thermal shock considered. The reliability of crack detection methods are discussed. (U.K.)
