Changes of mechanical properties of γ-irradiated silk fiber

  • 1. Sericultural Experiment Station, Yatabe, Ibaraki (Japan)

Description

Silk fibers were irradiated with gamma rays within the dosage range 0 to 21 Mrad. Changes of the mechanical properties of irradiated silk fibers were discussed from the stress-strain measurement. Strength and elongation of undegummed silk fiber decreased in the early stage of irradiation, while that of degummed silk fiber decreased remarkably with increasing radiation dose above 4 Mrad.
