High burnups for water reactor fuels - A UK perspective
Description
The present position with respect to the construction of nuclear power plants in the UK and prospects for the future is summarised. The paper reviews the effect that adopting high discharge burnup cycles has on the fuel manufacturing process, the core design, the performance of the fuel and on the reprocessing of discharged fuel. It is concluded that there are no fundamental difficulties which would preclude high burnup cycles in the UK's PWRs, although a number of detailed design and licensing issues would need to be addressed. Some suggestions are made regarding the content of the IAEA report on the impact of high burnup on the nuclear fuel cycle. (author). 3 refs, 1 tab
