Radiation damage in thin films of high T/sub c/ superconductors

  • 1. IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, NY (USA)

Description

Using O and As ions, the authors investigated the effects of ion irradiation on the superconducting electrical and microstructural properties of thin films of Y/sub 1/Ba/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub x/. Superconducting transitions were found to degrade in polycrystalline films by a decoupling of the superconducting grains while epitaxial films degrade due to bulk damage. Damage in the films was a result of elastic rather than electronic processes. Evidence is presented for 1D normal conductivity in the films
