Description

Electron heating experiments at ω = 2ω/sub CE/ have been performed in the end plugs of the Phaedrus Tandem Mirror. Typical target plasma parameters in the plug are n = 3 x 1012/ cm-3, T/sub E/ = 15 to 20 eV, and E/sub I/ = 600 to 800 eV. Pulses of 15.5 GHz microwaves at power levels of up to 30 kW and up to 1 ms in duration were injected into a single end plug when the machine is run as a quadrupole stabilized tandem mirror. Increases in plasma energy of up to 300 eV per electron-ion pair have been measured using diamagnetic loops. Thomson scattering has measured an increase in the bulk electron temperature of 30% during the microwave pulse. Measurements with a 3 channel target SXR detector have detected the presence of a hot electron tail with energies in excess of 10 keV. Microwave emission from hot electrons is detected by an 8 Ghz radiometer up to 50 ms after the cessation of the microwave power pulse and the plasma discharge
