Evaluation of X ray unit shielding by means of an industrial thulium 170 radioactive source

Description
Shielding thickness distribution and flaws are not readily available for evaluation during inspection work because the lead is usually no longer visible after the room finishing is completed. This is also often the case for concrete slabs or walls. When the evaluation cannot be performed adequately with an X-ray unit, an appropriate radioactive source can be used. Many used sup(99m)Tc with a very short half-life of 6 h and 144Ce, whose transmission curves for lead make it difficult to differentiate between 0.8 and 1.6 mm Pb which are often used commercially in North America. We present here transmission data obtained for 170Tm (Tsub(1/2)=127 d; 84 KeV) through various thicknesses of laminated lead sheets, lead glass, ordinary plate glass, concrete slabs, gypsum boards as well as simulated wall sections (60 x 60 cm) made of spaced gypsum boards only or shielded with various available lead thicknesses commonly found in North american buildings. The results show that 170Tm makes it possible to differentiate between 0.8 and 1.6 mm Pb, and a shielding evaluation is possible up to 4.0 mm Pb as long as the building material attenuation is taken into account in order to avoid lead equivalency overestimation
Abstract (French)
Les revetements de finition sur les parois d'une salle de rayons X nous empechent habituellement de proceder par inspection visuelle a une evaluation des epaisseurs de plomb et des autres materiaux de blindage et de deceler les failles possibles. Comme il arrive assez souvent de ne pouvoir faire une telle evaluation avec un appareil a rayons X, on peut alors utiliser une source radioactive appropriee. Certains ont utilise le sup(99m)Tc a demi-vie tres courte (6 h) et le 144Ce dont la courbe de transmission au travers du plomb ne nous permet pas de distinguer facilement entre 0,8 et 1,6 mm Pb, epaisseurs tres en usage en Amerique du Nord. Avec le 170Tm (Tsub(1/2)=127 j; 84 KeV) nous avons obtenu des donnees de transmission au travers d'epaisseurs variees de feuilles de plomb lamine, de verre ordinaire, de dalles de beton, de panneaux de gypse ainsi que de sections (60 x 60 cm) de murs simules faits de panneaux de gypse espaces et contenant differentes epaisseurs de plomb tels qu'eriges habituellement dans les batisses d'Amerique de Nord. Nos resultats indiquent qu'avec le 170Tm nous pouvons bien distinguer entre 0,8 et 1,6 mm Pb, et faire une evaluation de blindage jusqu'a 4,0 mm Pb a la condition de tenir compte de l'attenuation due aux materiaux de construction.
