Synthesis and polymerization of naftoxazines containing Furan Groups: a strategy for obtaining new high-performance thermosets

: In this work, new monomers of naphthoxazines containing furan groups were synthesized and had their polymerization behavior studied. The monomers were characterized by FTIR and NMR (1H and 13C) analysis Thermal analyzes (DSC and TGA) have shown that the naphthoxazines exhibit typical polymerization exothermic events with a good processing window, but nevertheless suffer significant mass losses at temperatures below the initial polymerization temperature. Thus, a catalyst (1 mol% MgCl2) was used in order to allow the polymerization of the compounds prior to the mass loss events. The FT-IR analysis showed strong evidence of the formation of poly(naphthoxazines) and TGA analyzes showed that these polymers have high thermal stability, with high flame resistance with self-extinguishing properties (LOI> 28), which makes them attractive in the development of high performance materials.
