Description
There are several questions that the Standard Model leaves unresolved, such as the origin of electroweak symmetry breaking, the gauge hierarchy problem, the origin of CP violation, the origin of the particle spectrum. These problems are reviewed with emphasis on the gauge hierarchy problem. A possible mechanism for generating a hierarchy in the context of superstring theory is described. (K.A.) 24 refs
