Anomalous characteristics of the microcrystalline state of SiC fibres

  • 1. Tohoku Univ., Sendai (Japan). Research Inst. for Iron, Steel and Other Metals

Description

The microstructure of SiC fibres prepared from the precursor polycarbosilane by heat treatments has been investigated. Chemical analysis of the precursor fibre, the fibre after curing, the SiC fibre and the SiC fibre after heat treatment at 12500c are given. The distribution of the SiC and the excess C noted in the fibre have been investigated and the affect the excess carbon and oxygen introduced in the curing process may have on the microcrystalline state of β - SiC studied. Variations in X-ray patterns and in tensile strengths of the precursor fibres caused by different heat-treatment temperatures are shown. (UK)
