Description

An X-ray luminosity function is derived for a representative volume-limited sample of O-type stars selected from the catalog of Galactic O stars surveyed with the Einstein Observatory. It was found that, for the stars of this sample which is ten times larger than any previously analyzed, the level of X-ray emission is strongly correlated with bolometric luminosity, confirming previous findings of an Lx-L(bol) relationship (e.g., Harnden et al., 1979; Pallavicini et al., 1981). Correlations between the Lx and the mass loss rate with the wind terminal velocity or with the rotation rate were weak. However, there was a strong correlation with wind momentum flux as well as with the wind kinetic energy flux. 50 refs
