Long-term storage of spent fuel
Description
The Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1983 authorized cooperative agreements between the Department of Energy (DOE) and the utilities to perform tests and demonstrations required to license dry storage of spent fuels. This presentation describes tests and demonstrations of dry storage and rod consolidation by the utilities and DOE. The utilities are now able to temporarily accommodate their increasing inventory of spent fuels. However, this is a temporary solution, for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission licensed this technology for only 20 years, anticipating that the fuel would later be disposed through the interim integrated monitored retrievable storage and repository disposal programs.
