A study of turbulence induced by sound waves

Description

The efficiency of sonic coagulation and precipitation of particles in an acoustic field is strongly reinforced above the acoustic intensity threshold corresponding to the appearance of acoustic turbulence. The aim of this work is to evaluate the turbulence properties of the experimental system in order to calculate acoustic agglomeration and precipation kernels. A study of the aerodynamic behaviour of the fluid has shown the presence of turbulence in the system. Then, turbulence spectra have been measured in order to foresee the turbulence evolution (the largest structures degenerate in small eddies; inside them sonic coagulation occurs). Finally, the energy dissipated into heat in the system - a parameter representative of turbulence - has been evaluated

Abstract (French)

L'efficacite de l'agglomeration et de la precipitation acoustique de particules soumises a des ondes sonores devient plus importante a partir du seuil d'apparition de turbulence acoustique. Le present travail consiste a determiner le taux de turbulence du systeme experimental, afin de quantifier les coefficients de coagulation et de precipitation acoustique. Dans une premiere partie, l'etude du comportement aerodynamique du fluide permet de mettre en evidence la presence de turbulence dans le systeme. Dans une seconde partie, les spectres d'energie turbulente sont evalues afin de prevoir l'evolution de la turbulence (degenerescence des structures primaires en petits tourbillons au sein desquels se produit la coagulation sonique). Enfin, la turbulence est quantifiee par l'intermediaire de l'energie dissipee dans le systeme
