TEM studies of neutron induced changes in pyrocarbon microstructure and the influence of microstructural variations on gaseous fission product retention

Description
Transmission electron microscopy investigations were performed on pyrocarbon coated fuel particles to determine the changes in microstructure induced by neutron irradiation of various types of coatings, appropriate for HTR service. Measurements of the volume fraction of the mosaic component as a function of the layer radius, changes of the microstructure during irradiation, and variation of the specific crack length are reported. The investigations were undertaken to provide data on the release of fission products. (GSC)
Abstract (German)
Es wurden Untersuchungen mittels Durchstrahlungselektronenmikroskop an mit Pyrokohlenstoff beschichteten Brennstoffteilchen durchgefuehrt, um die Aenderung der Mikrostruktur infolge Neutronenbestrahlung bei verschiedenen fuer den Einsatz im HTR geeigneter Beschichtungen zu bestimmen. Es wird ueber Messungen des Volumenanteils der Mosaik-Komponente als Funktion des Schichtradius, Aenderungen der Mikrostruktur waehrend der Bestrahlung und Schwankung der spezifischen Risslaenge berichtet. Die Untersuchungen wurden durchgefuehrt, um Daten ueber die Freisetzung von Spaltprodukten zu liefern. (GSC)Additional details
