Comparison of Ir-Al and Co-Al intermetallic mixtures for nuclear applications

Description
The paper refers to the composition of Co-Al and Ir-Al mixtures in the field of rich aluminum compounds. It is very difficult to obtain these as pure compounds, and their long time life maintaining at high temperatures due to the incongruous compounds that form. The part of the Al-Co diagram aluminum-rich was completed by Grushko who reported the existence of two phases very close to each and other, Al13Co4 and Al3Co, in the range of Al9Co2 and Al2Co5 compounds. In the Ir-Al binary system seven intermetallic compounds were reported. The crystal structure of Al2,75Ir phase was observed by Ferro and determined as cP60. The invariance reaction Melt + AlIr <--> Al2,75Ir was reported as eutectic. This is very important a fact which makes these two systems to distinguish each other. (authors)
