Search for the maximum efficiency of a ribbed-surfaces device, providing a tight seal

Description

The purpose of this experiment was to determine the geometrical characteristics of ribbed surfaces used to equip devices in translation or slow rotation motion and having to form an acceptable seal between slightly viscous fluids. It systematically studies the pressure loss coefficient lambda in function of the different parameters setting the form of ribs and their relative position on the opposite sides. It shows that the passages with two ribbed surfaces lead to highly better results than those with only one, the maximum value of lambda, equal to 0.5, being obtained with the ratios: pitch/clearance = 5, depth of groove/clearance = 1,2, and with their teeth face to face on the two opposite ribbed surfaces. With certain shapes, alternate position of ribs can lead to the maximum of lambda yet lower than 0.5

Abstract (French)

Cette recherche a ete effectuee en vue de determiner experimentalement les caracteristiques geometriques de surfaces striees, utilisees pour equiper des dispositifs en mouvement de translation ou de rotation lente, a qui elles doivent assurer une etancheite acceptable entre fluides peu visqueux. Elle comporte une etude systematique du coefficient de perte de charge lambda en fonction des differents parametres definissant la forme des stries ainsi que leur position relative sur les faces en regard. Elle a montre que les passages dont les deux faces sont striees conduisent a des resultats nettement superieurs a ceux n'en ayant qu'une seule, la valeur maximale de lambda, egale a 0,5 ayant ete obtenue pour les rapports pas/jeu = 5 et profondeur des stries/jeu = 1,2, avec des dents minces en vis a vis sur les deux surfaces striees. Pour certaines geometries, la position alternee des stries peut conduire au maximum de lambda, inferieur toutefois a 0,5
