Investigation into binary systems Sn-REM (La, Nd, Gd, Er, Lu)

Description
On the basis of thermographic and metallographic investigations of binary systems Sn-rare earth metal (la, Nd, Gd, Er, Lu) the conclusion is made, that alloys with rare earth metal content up to 25 at.% are referred to the eutectic ones. The eutectics is degenerated on the side of tin. Sn and SnΛ3 REM compounds are the main structural constituents. Position of liquidus line on the phase diafram La-Sn in the range of compositions 0-25 at.% La is specified and phase diagrams Sn-Nd and Sn-Gd in the range of compositions 0-33 at.% rare earth metal are plotted. Allthe systems studied are characterized by the formation of SnΛ3 REM intermetallic compounds. Equations, describing the solubility of rare earth metals in liquid Sn, depending on temperature up to rare earth metal concentration, corresponding to pure SnΛ3 REM intermetallics, are found. It is established, that the solubility increases in the series from La to Lu
