Description

The Defense Waste Management Plan issued in June 1983, set forth the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) long-term plan for the management of radioactive waste resulting from atomic energy defense activities. DOE's goal for high level radioactive waste, as stated in this plan, is to achieve permanent disposal. In order to meet this goal, technologies and processes to support permanent disposal must be developed and implemented. The author discusses how these processes must take the waste that is in interim storage and make it into a form suitable for permanent disposal
