Photoacoustic spectroscopy as a tool for the study of the radiation chemistry of organic powders in the solid state

This article demonstrates that photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS), which correlates very strongly with conventional absorption spectroscopy, is a useful technique in the study of the effects of radiation on organic materials in powder form. Examples of PAS spectra of glycylglycine, gelatine and uracil at doses from 0 to over 100 Megarad are presented. Although no new bands were observed throughout the dose range investigated, dose response curves derived from the PAS spectra may be used to study the kinetics of solid state radiolysis. These dose response curves may also be used for very high dose dosimetry. (author)
