Possible usage of X-fluorescence in routine quality control of X-ray diagnostic units

Description

Small changes in the peak voltage of a diagnostic x-ray tube can cause significant modifications in the absorbed dose or degrade the contrast of an x-ray image. It has been suggested that kVp should be monitored routinely however a standardized noninvasive technique for kVp monitoring has yet to be developed. Our measurements have demonstrated that the ratio of the integral number of Compton scattered photons to that of fluorescent photons using a fixed geometry is a sensitive index of kVp (peak tube voltage)

Abstract (Serbian)

Male varijacije napona kojim se napajaju rendgenske cevi mogu uzrokovati znacajne promene apsorbovane doze kao i degradaciju kontrasta rendgenske slike. Mada je preporuceno da se kVp rutinski kontrolise, jos uvek ne postoji standardizovana tehnika za kontrolu visokog napona rendgenskih cevi. U ovom radu su istrazene mogucnosti upotrebe karakteristicne h-fluorescentne radijacije koja se emituje tokom izlaganja odabranog materijala snopu rendgenskog zracenja. Preliminarni rezultati pokazuju da je intenzitet kako Komptonski rasejanog tako i fluorescentnog zracenja veoma zavistan od maksimalne energije rendgenskog snopa i da bi se jednostavnim spektroskopskim merenjem mogao dobiti veoma senzitivan pokazatelj varijacija visokog napona dijagnosticke rendgenske cevi
