Influence of zirconia stabilization by Fe2 O3 addition in zirconia-ceria system

Description

The effect of addition of Fe 2 O 3 (0.1 and 0.5 mol%) on the stabilization of Zr O 2-Ce O 2 system was studied in this work. The doping on Zr O 2 was carried out by co-precipitation using 1 to 4 mol% of ceria. X-ray diffraction patterns showed that the addition of small concentration of Fe 2 O 3 (0.1 or 0.5 mol%) Zr O 2 - 1 mol% Ce O 2 is fully stabilized in tetragonal/cubic phase with addition of 0.5 mol% Fe 2 O 3, In the case of the system 96 mol% Zr O 2 4 mol% Ce O 2 the powder is calcined at 9000 C completely stabilized in cubic/tetragonal phase without any addition of Fe 2 O 3. In this case it was not possible to analyze the effect of this transmission metal oxide on the stabilization of system. (author)
