Inductive pluse detection of piezoelectric resonance in PZT ceramics

Description

An inductive method of piezoelectric resonance detection is applied to prepoled PZT ceramic samples by using an rf pulse spectrometer. A fast decaying free induction decay(FID)-like signal is observed after an rf pulse at or near the resonance frequency. Dependence of the resonance single on the pulse height and width is studied to clarify the detection process. The resonance frequency which depends on the amount of piezoelectric loading of the sample. The decay measured from the signal correlates with the broadening of resonance line which is directly related to the mechanical quality factor QM of the sample. We find that the line broadening is a homogeneous one. This fact supports the current view that the ferroelectric domain wall motions are the main source of the mechanical loss od PZT. (Author)
