France pushes forward with FBR fuel reprocessing
Description
To accompany the French FBR development programme, equivalent investigations have been conducted on the fuel cycle, and in particular on reprocessing. The Tor facility for the reprocessing of FBR fuels is described with respect to configuration and composition of fuel assemblies, plant capacity, dissolution, extraction and maintenance. The Tor project is intended to increase the capacity of the Marcoule facility from between 1.5 and 2 t/y to 5 t/y to enable complete closure of the Phenix fuel cycle. Currently, design work is concentrated on Mar 600, an intermediate scale, 50 t/y FBR fuel reprocessing plant which would meet the reprocessing needs of Super Phenix and of two subsequent 1500 MWe FBRs.
