Description
This article is a brief overview of environmental cleanup efforts at the Hanford Reservation. The discussion centers on the effort to move 2100 tons of spent fuel, now stored at the K Reactor site, into safe storage by December 1999. With an annual monitoring cost of $35M, removal to safe storage would be a major cost savings. A plan toward dry cask storage is being pushed as an interim measure by Westinghouse Hanford until a national repository is completed, and WHC believes that this approach can achieve safe storage a year in advance by utilizing a partially completed area originally planned for a waste vitrification plant
