Nozzle dam remote installation system and technique

Description

This paper describes an improved method for remotely translocating nozzle dam means from outside a nuclear reactor steam generator channel head to coupled association with nozzle holddown ring means within the channel head to thereby eliminate, or at least substantially minimize personnel exposure to radiation and/or radioactive contamination environment within the channel head. The improved method comprises: predetermining a first situs on the tubesheet associated with a nuclear reactor steam generator channel head; introducing into the nuclear reactor steam generator channel head, through a manway provided in the wall thereof, tubesheet tackle means; remotely attaching the tubesheet tackle means; operatively associating nozzle dam strapping means; operatively associating the nozzle dam strapping means; actuating the second lifting means; remotely disengaging the nozzle dam strapping means from operative association with the nozzle dam; remotely effecting a determination of the proper orientation of the nozzle dam in relation to the nozzle holddown ring; remotely securing, at least temporarily, the nozzle dam means to the nozzle holddown ring; introducing into the nuclear reactor steam generator channel head; remotely securing, the nozzle dam center section means to the nozzle holddown ring; and introducing into the channel head suitable torquing means for securing the nozzle dam means to the nozzle holddown ring
