Description
MITI set up the study committee on improvement and standardization of LWRs, made up of men of learning and experience and the representatives of the electrical industry and manufacturers in 1975. The committee has for three years carried on the studies on the improvement and standardization of LWR plants, and sent inspection delegations to European countries and the United States. The committee chose a total of four types regarding reactors and their electric power output, both BWR and PWR types of 800 MW and 1,100 MW. The two-stage improvement and standardization program for establishing so-called Japanese-type LWRs by about 1980 was adopted as follows: 1) to reduce occupational radiation exposure and to improve the efficiency of operation of LWRs, and 2) to improve the components and systems of LWRs and to carry out the standardization of LWR plants. This report covers 1) the studies carried on by the committee up to the present, 2) the basic specifications of the first-stage standardized LWR plants, and 3) the second stage improvement and standardization program.
