Disposal of a corpse containing radioiodine: our experience in radiation protection and regulatory issues

Description
Recently an unusual incident in dispensing a corpse containing radioactivity was encountered following the death of a 57 year old female patient with a body burden of nearly 18mCi of 131I as the exposure rate at 1 meter was 04mR/hr. The patient was administered 300mCi for the treatment of Follicular Ca thyroid with bone metastasis. The patient died due to natural death. The disposal of this radioactive corpse was done as per the Atomic Energy (radiation protection rules 2004) of AERB in presence of RSO III. The steps followed in dispensing the corpse keeping in mind radiation exposures to relatives and general public is described in this paper
