Bidimensional and multifrequency modelization of a free electron laser

Description
One of the most challenging problem in the Free Electron Laser physics lies in the understanding of the spectral dynamics of the laser. The evolution of the laser signal is governed first by a linear build-up period, and then by a non-linear regime where saturation occurs. In the latter regime, the different frequencies interact with one another because they are coupled by the electronic beam. To investigate the possible existence of stationary regime characterized by a large laser power but a narrow spectrum, we have developed a formalism describing the radial and spectral dynamics of FEL from noise up to saturation. We present numerical simulations of this model which illustrate the main physical mechanisms involved in the spectral FEL physics. (authors)
Abstract (French)
Le document qui suit concerne des developpements theoriques portant sur les lasers a Electrons Libres (LEL) de type Compton. Dans un tel laser, l'energie cinetique d'un faisceau d'electrons relativistes est convertie en energie laser. Notre but est ici d'etudier la physique de ce processus de conversion d'energie pour permettre l'optimisation des experiences en cours, leur analyse et une eventuelle extrapolation des resultats. Nous etudions dans cette note la dynamique spectrale d'un LEL evoluant du bruit de fond jursqu'a la saturation. Dans le regime de saturation, la dynamique est non lineaire et les differentes frequences laser interagissent entre elles via le faisceau electronique. L'existence et l'analyse de regime stationnaires cor- respondant a une forte puissance laser et a un spectre etroit est a la fois un probleme physique delicat et un enjeu majeur pour le developpement des LEL. Pour aborder ces questions, nous developpons dans cette note un formalisme et un code de simulation adaptes. Un certain nombre d'applications numeriques nous permettent d'illustrer les principaux effets physiques mis en jeu par la dynamique spectrale d'un LEL. (auteurs)Files
