Catalytic activity of rare earth(3) salts in reaction of chloromethylation of aromatic hydrocarbons

  • 1. Moskovskij Gosudarstvennyj Univ., Moscow (USSR)

Description

Reaction of electrophilic substitution in the series of arenes (C6H6, C6H5CH3) under the effect of ClCH2OCH3 in the presence of trivalent lanthanide salts LnCl3, where Ln=Ce, Dy, Er and Sm(O3SCF3)3 as catalysts (room temperature, 24 hours) is investigated. It is shown that lanthanide salts manifest in the reaction studied properties of weak but hard Lewis acids and the process takes place exclusively as chloromethylation with subsequent formation of diarylmethanes
