JINR experiments on the Serpukhov accelerator (present and proposed)

Description

Experiments made by the JINR scientests on the Serpukhov accelerator are reviewed. Scientific programs fulfilled on some installations are described in brief. A search for charmed baryons and mesons with a small decay width was performed on the BIS-2 installation in the neutron+carbon nucleus reaction. The RISK installation (relativistic ionization streamer chamber) is intended for studying hadron-hadron high-energy interactions. The TAU installation, the main components of which are drift chambers, is used to search for particles with life times of 10-11 -10-12 s. The search of new short-lived particles is performed on the SHARM installation, photoemulsion and spark detector being used. The POSITRONIY installation is used for studies on some problems of elementary-particle physics. Polarization in the π-p - scattering is measured on the PROZA installation at the 40 GeV energy. The POLARIMETER, GIPERON, ALFA and FOTON installations are developed to study polarization effects at elastic scattering of high-energy particles, scattering with hypercharge exchange, the structure of scattering amplitude of charged hadrons, and processes of e+e- - pair production and γ-quantum, respectively. A project of the reconstruction of the LUDMILA 2-meter liquid-hydrogen bubble chamber is discussed
