Crack detection of the perpendicular cracked plate using normal deflection

  • 1. Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, Aju University, Suwon (Korea, Republic of)

Description

An effective method for detecting cracks in a plate using normal deflection analysis is proposed. The normal deflection of an edge of a surface crack in the plate under tensile stress is analysed. The length and location of the crack is determined by contouring of the surface deformation of the cracked plate. An analytical solution by beam theory and finite element solutions are obtained. The analytical solution consists of the deflection of a beam and the half-space or full-space solution. Also finite element solutions are obtained and compared with these analytical solutions. These results suggest more efficient surface crack detection tool.
